Victoria Pickering

Currently a web designer and developer, and sort-of artist.  Formerly I was a quant and an actuary for many years, and before that studied cognitive psychology. Have been an independent consultant and entrepreneur for 25 years, spending most of that time focusing on creating new products and product types. Lots of experience in product design and implementation, algorithms, stochastic modeling, Monte Carlo simulations, systems architecture, information architecture, derivatives, complex financial instruments and transactions (before they became insane), and some experience in artificial intelligence. Currently concentrating on trying to bring the same creative/mathematical approach to create new web applications. Also trying to develop as an artist.

I’m writing this blog for several reasons:

  1. Digital technology and communication completely fascinates me. The fact that works produced digitally are simultaneously permanent and yet completely mutable, and the speed of creation of new content, are unparalleled. I think it will end up changing our thought patterns in ways we don’t even envision yet.
  2. I’m not young. Most of my friends and acquaintances aren’t interested in the same technological things that I am, so I’m looking for other outlets.
  3. I want to absorb myself in things that are interesting so that I don’t go crazy. We had a daughter – we adopted her when she was a baby – and when she was 19 she got lost in the ocean in a kayak in the fog and the Coast Guard never found her.
    The grief never goes away, but I hope the craziness can be kept at bay if I work hard enough at thinking about interesting things. And in an odd way, after her strange death my thoughts seem to access areas I didn’t know about before.

And why is it called The Reinvented Blog, which is kind of pretentious?
Well, a couple of years ago I got this idea that I would start a whole spectrum of companies that would be the best-of-the-best source of information – again, kind of pretentious in the extreme, but a good day-dream. And, being a late-comer to the process, I discovered that all the good domain names had already been taken. So I was happy when I thought up some names that were still available and that represented how I was looking to reinvent myself – so I now have a suite of names with “reinvented” in the name, and maybe someday I’ll even add content to most of them. Currently there is only Fitness Reinvented and Design Reinvented. Cooking Reinvented content is coming soon.
